Subject: Enforcement Procedures and Scheduling for Occupational Exposure to Tuberculosis

  1. Purpose

    This directive transmits the attached Federal OSHA enforcement policy regarding occupational exposure to tuberculosis which has been adopted verbatim by OSHNC.

  2. Scope

    This enforcement policy applies to the five occupational settings which have been identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as being at greater risk for exposure to Mycobacterium tuberculosis than other workplace settings.

  3. Background

    Federal OSHA revised and updated its enforcement procedures regarding occupational exposure to tuberculosis to reflect the revisions made by CDC to their guidelines. The revised CDC guidelines were published in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) and the Federal Register on October 28, 1994.

  4. Cancellation

    This directive cancels and replaces the Enforcement Memorandum to Regional Administrators entitled Enforcement Policy and Procedures for Occupational Exposure to Tuberculosis dated October 8, 1993.

  5. Statement of Policy

    See attached directive.

  6. Term of Action

    This policy becomes effective immediately and shall remain in effect until canceled by a new or revised policy.
